Studio Equipment List for Elmwood Studio
Stuart Sikes has an impressive discography. One that includes acts like Hot Hot Heat, Jets to Brazil, The Willowz, The Spinanes, Modest Mouse and The White Stripes, just to name a few.
Stuart Sikes career in music started in Memphis, TN in the early 90’s. He spent 7 years moving from intern to basically running the show at the Easley-McCain Studio, where artists like Sonic Youth and Pavement had recorded, Stuart learned the art of balance in the studio.
In 2001, Sikes returned to Dallas, and word of his supportive, non-invasive recording style quickly spread. Passionate about live or recorded music, he continues to bring national acts to Dallas and keeps his hand in on the local scene as well. Most recently, he built a studio known as Elmwood Recording that suits his style and has an impressive list of analogue and digital gear.
Known for his slow, thoughtful (and sometimes perfectionist) approach to getting what the band wants, Sikes does not have a ‘signature sound’. His recordings sound like the best the artist can be, whether it be Cat Power, Loretta Lynn or more obscure bands like The Theater Fire or DARYL. He may take his time, but it pays off since the artist often gets the results they want in the first take. “I try to help bands make a record that they want to have,” says Stuart. “It’s not my band; it’s your band. My job is about the intangibles I can do to make someone play better. If that’s just about making them more comfortable, then I’m doing a good job.”
